LABOR & DELIVERY

Delivering Multiples

Trust the experts for your pregnancy and childbirth journey

At Woman’s, we understand the special nature of a multiple pregnancy. When you’re pregnant with twins, triplets, or more, you need specialized care.

Though you may deliver vaginally, your babies’ births will take place in our C-section suites should the need for an emergency cesarean delivery arise.

Once your babies arrive, we encourage skin-to-skin contact to promote early bonding and support you if you choose to breastfeed.

Experience Matters

Woman’s has the best specialists in the region to handle your multiples during pregnancy and birth, including:

  • Double-board certified neonatologists, specializing in pediatric care and the care of infants who require advanced medical attention.
  • The region’s most experienced Maternal-Fetal Medicine physicians with training and experience in the care of high-risk mothers and their babies, available 24-hours a day, seven days a week.
  • The only board-certified geneticist in Baton Rouge
  • Registered nurses, registered sonographers (experts trained to perform ultrasound testing) and support personnel - all dedicated to the highest standards of care.

Antepartum (literally, “before childbirth”) is a high-risk obstetrical unit at Woman’s. Nurses are trained in maternal and fetal surveillance and to conduct non-stress testing. Our Maternal-Fetal Medicine physicians work with your obstetrician to offer care for complications common to pregnancies with multiples, including preterm labor.

If you are confined to bed rest in the hospital, we will work to create a home-like atmosphere and encourage you to invite your family to be involved in your pregnancy. Throughout your stay, you’ll have access to a resource center complete with kitchenette, washer, dryer and education area. There’s even a space for you to hold a baby shower.

After delivery, your babies will be the center of your world as well as ours. Should your babies need extra care after birth, our neonatologists are board-certified in both pediatrics and neonatology, meaning they have the experience necessary to provide your babies with the care they need. Our NICU  is the only local facility with an anesthesiologist and a neonatologist in-house 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, should your babies need them.

Woman’s also has a specialized infant surgery team that performs 240 infant surgeries a year on babies under the age of one year. An operating room customized for infants is located in the NICU to provide life-saving procedures quickly and easily without need for transport out of the unit or hospital. Woman's is one of only a handful of hospitals across the nation able to provide support for highly specialized surgeries like an EXIT procedure - surgery on a baby before birth.

From advanced practice nurses and social workers with graduate degrees to experienced lactation consultants and anesthesiologists who specialize in pediatrics, our staff continues to research and explore new treatments and therapies to ensure your babies receive the best possible care.
